NVIDIA Infrastructure Deals With Thermo Fisher, Lilly Anchor Pharma's Shift to AI-Native Drug Discovery

NVIDIA is expanding as an infrastructure provider to Thermo Fisher and Eli Lilly as a cluster of AI-native biotech platforms launches in 2026. Novo Nordisk posted strong Q1 2026 results while closing its internal cell therapy unit and licensing the asset to AI-native platform Cellular Intelligence, signaling top pharma is outsourcing discovery capability rather than building it in-house.

NVIDIA is expanding its role as infrastructure provider to Thermo Fisher and Eli Lilly, anchoring a wave of AI-native biotech platform launches through 2026. BioNeMo, MindWalk's HYFT/ReefIQ, Boltz Lab, Owkin, Natera, Basecamp Research, and Edison Scientific have all launched in rapid succession in early-to-mid 2026.

The pattern extends beyond infrastructure vendors. Novo Nordisk posted strong Q1 2026 earnings and a rising stock while restructuring its own R&D. The company closed its internal cell therapy unit and licensed the asset to Cellular Intelligence, an AI-native platform4. That move signals even top-tier pharma is shifting drug discovery capability toward external AI specialists rather than in-house infrastructure.

MindWalk Holdings offers a case study in what that outsourced capability looks like. Its HYFT Technology is a proprietary, function-aware representation of biology built on roughly 660 million biological patterns — universal fingerprints encoding conserved relationships between sequence, structure, and function1. The company filed patent EP26187897.9, which protects a computational layer built on its foundational HYFT patent (EP3881326A1), organizing biological meaning into a form reusable across infrastructure, customer programs, and AI workflows2. MindWalk has said the filing is "the computational layer built on the original foundation, not a re-filing of it"2.

MindWalk's pitch centers on a data problem pharma has struggled to solve internally. Drug discovery data is scattered across files, formats, systems, teams, and workflows, and biology is deeply interconnected. Before an AI system can reason usefully about a biological question, that fragmented information has to be reconnected into a single, governed, queryable web of context, the company argues3. MindWalk has said representation of biology itself is "the hard part, and the place to build a durable advantage"3.

The company gave its first public demonstration of ReefIQ, its platform built on HYFT, in mid-20263.

For investors, the throughline is consolidation of AI infrastructure spend around NVIDIA-backed platforms, paired with pharma licensing out capabilities it once built internally. Novo Nordisk's cell therapy exit and Cellular Intelligence licensing deal is the clearest signal yet that this shift extends to established, profitable drugmakers, not just early-stage biotech.
